11 Refreshing Spa Treatments You Can Do at Home

Blog | January 10th, 2019

It’s the new year. Time to start fresh. But just thinking about the same old resolutions of diet and boring exercise can quickly dull your newly accumulated holiday sparkle. However, spa treatments will rejuvenate, relax and ultimately give you the push to fulfill your goals to health and happiness. From prepping to tools to the experience itself, let’s start this new year off with a new you as well!

Clean Up and Clear Out

First things first. No experience will be relaxing while surrounded by clutter and old toiletries. I’m not one to waste, but at the minimum, box up all crusty tubes and get them out of sight. Scrub the “spa room”, especially the tub. Make the light fixtures shine. The scrubbing can be a mini work out and the cleanliness will give the feel of walking into a real spa which will raise your relaxation level.

Create the Atmosphere

A large part of a great spa experience is setting the atmosphere. While essential oils provide a wonderful aroma that surrounds you…scented candles will fill the entire room with relaxing scents. Dim the lights to enjoy the tranquility of the candlelight. Add rose petals around and in the tub to give the sought after feeling of being pampered. It will also take you away as if you are in an upscale scenario away from home. Create a relaxing spa mood by playing soothing music while you are enjoying your facial or as you lounge in the bath. Just be sure to keep your music source away from any water…especially the tub!

Slow Down and Set the Mood

It’s hard to go from 100 mph to relaxation without taking time to slow down and soak it in. A true spa experience has to be felt…not just going through the motions. Don’t walk away still feeling hurried and stressed. Start with some stretches, yoga or deep breathing exercises to prepare yourself to feel the true spa experience.

Facial Steam

Start with a pot with hot water or facial steamer. Place a towel over both your head and the pot to contain the steam. Breathe deeply for 10 minutes. This will be relaxing while it opens your pores in preparation for the upcoming facial scrubs.

Epsom Salts and Essential Oils

Soaking in an Epsom salt bath can remove harmful toxins while chemically balancing the body. It has also been known to help with weight management, relief from sore muscles and general relaxation. Use two cups of Epsom salts for a standard-sized bathtub of warm water. Pour the salt under the water faucet to allow it to dissolve and mix well into the bath water. Add your favorite essential oil for even more enjoyment.

Coffee and Coconut Oil Exfoliating

The caffeine in coffee increases blood flow and may reduce the appearance of cellulite while giving your skin a more even tone. Adding coconut oil is a great skin softener. Coconut oil can delay the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin. It also helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties. It’s also a good way to recycle your old coffee grounds!

Hair and Eyes

While indulging your body don’t forget your hair and tired eyes. There are tons of options in stores and online for hair masks. Your hair will reap many benefits, depending on what ingredients you choose. For example, adding honey to your mask is a natural moisturizer for dry and dull hair; whereas lemon and apple cider vinegar remove excess oils from your scalp. With eye strain, stress and lack of sleep…your delicate eyes need pampering, too. Try an ice roller for relief from headaches and puffiness. Eye gels or a cool cucumber slice will replace the tired puffiness with a literal brighter outlook.

Foot Soaks

Feet and hands are probably the most overworked and underpaid body parts so give them some special pampering time.  Foot and hand soaks will pave the way for the rest of you to feel rejuvenated. With Epsom salt and essential oils, you can make homemade soaks that will do just that! Check out this Youtube video for some amazing ideas.

Comfort and Convenience Count

A bath pillow is a must for soft head support and total relaxation. Choose one with suction cups to hold it in place. Don’t lose your sense of tranquility fighting a sliding bath towel from slipping into the water. Use a caddy tray keep healthy snacks, a book, scrubs and a glass of wine at your fingertips while you relax. Plan well and have everything you need within reach. This will avoid shattering your experience with leaving your warm bath just to grab the one thing you forgot.

Body Scrubbing

Let no part go unpampered. For the hard to reach places a body scrubber will literally hit the spot. It will soap you up while providing an amazing back scratch, which is a soothing treatment in itself! Added benefits are exfoliating your skin and stimulating blood flow that will leave you glowing.

Massages

This is obviously something that cannot be done alone. But if your other half is nearby, it can be added as your grand finale. Turn your oven on low. Place several towels on a cookie sheet and have them warming while you partake in your choices of treatments. If you can’t relax at the thought of the oven doing the warming, you can also use a heating pad or a heated throw. Have your heated item placed on your back to warm and relax those muscles. Give each other a deep back and shoulder massage followed by another round of warmth. No further instructions needed as you will probably be deeply rooted in relaxation and ready for a restful sleep.
