15 Free Things To Do on Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day can be a lot of pressure, especially if you think you have to spend a lot of money to show your loved one how much you care. It turns out the best way to show them how you care is with thoughtful and personalized ideas and fun experiences. Here are a few that won't wreck your budget.
Breakfast Picnic In Bed
Making breakfast for someone is one of the sweetest things you can do for a person. If you take that breakfast and bring it to them so they don’t even have to leave their bed, now that’s romantic. Get creative with this one. Try to recreate the scene of an actual outdoor picnic with a blanket, flowers, and maybe even a wicker basket if you have. Then cuddle up with your loved one for coffee in bed!
Surprise Romantic Scavenger Hunt
This is another great way to start the day off with romance in the air (though it’s just as good at night too). Leave clues around the house that lead your loved one to some kind of surprise. Maybe it’s flowers? A cute gift? You? Whatever you think of, the thoughtfulness and mystery are sure to bring a smile to their face.
Personalized Newlyweds Game
Here’s a fun one and a chance to have some laughs about how well you and your significant other know each other. Each of you writes a series of questions down about your relationship, like “Where was our first date?” or “What’s my favorite band?” and then see if you’re both on the same page.
You always hope to catch some of the best moments of your relationship on camera. Set up a romantic photoshoot for you and your boo. Build a photo “studio” (that is, set up an area with an attractive, romantic, or fun backdrop for your photos) and pick out a range of attire for you two to wear. You and your significant other can have fun with posing, changing costumes, and having fun while making photo memories.
12 Months of Pre-Planned Dates
The best gifts are often experiences. This thoughtful gift is one that you can create and will talk about with your partner throughout the evening. The idea is to create a series of 12 cards that each have a different date night itinerary on it. It shows that you’re thinking about your relationship and gives your partner romance to look forward to all year, not only on Valentine’s Day. Here’s an
of how to do it.
Take A Romantic Public Transport Ride
Even in our hometowns and cities, we all have places that we haven’t been to that we’re curious about. That curiosity can be very romantic! Come up with a few different stops on the subway or bus that you and your partner are curious about and take a ride. You can choose to get off and see where the night takes you, or you can just ride the bus and point out sites along the way.
Exchange Romantic IOUs
These aren’t your typical IOUs. Every relationship is give-and-take, so the idea behind these IOUs is that you’re giving something to your significant other in advance. Both of you will write an IOU on a card and exchange them. They should be for cute things like a massage, cooking dinner, or watching a movie of their choice.
Romantic Free Museum Day
Chances are museums near you have a free entry day or evening. Take advantage of that to have a romantic evening at the museum. To make things interesting, tell each other how each piece reminds you of them and pick out the top three that reflect your relationship together.
Recreate Their Favorite Restaurant
What’s better than taking your partner to their favorite restaurant? The thought and care of recreating it at home. Chances are you won’t quite get there, but the experience sure will create a romantic evening that couldn’t possibly have been created had you gone to the actual restaurant.
Have a Complimentary Roast Battle
Are you familiar with the Roast Battles on Comedy Central? Think of that, except where you are only complimenting what you love most about the other person. Put on a beat in the background and take turns complimenting each other in verse form. It’ll feel silly at first, but you’ll sure have bunch of laughs. If that’s not your speed, you can always substitute for writing poems.
Make Heart Shaped Foods Together
There’s good reason why the heart is the iconic shape of Valentine’s Day. Something about it just evokes romantic feelings. Another thing that evokes romantic feelings is the act of cooking and backing together. So get out that baking sheet and make heart shaped food with your loved one.
If you and your partner share a love of music then this could be a really fun activity for you. Grab a bottle of champagne and set up your computer or TV as a karaoke machine. Create a
of all your favorite songs as a couple and sing them together.
Create Their Favorite Movie Experience
At this point, you may know your significant other’s favorite movies. Even better if you know their favorites romance movies. Create a night where you watch one or two of their favorites while creating a romantic environment wherever you’re watching. This could mean decorating romantically or taking elements from the movie (like food or setting) and preparing accordingly where you are.
Build A Romance Retreat
The concept here is sort of similar to building a fort when you’re a kid. Take a space in your home (it could be your bed or not) and turn it into a romance wonderland that’s shut off from the outer world. No electronics. No distractions. Just you and your boo spending quality time together.
Take Your Own Dance Lessons
Move the coffee table out of the way and cue up some YouTube tutorials for this one. You don’t have to go to a club to dance with your loved one. Come up with a few different dance techniques and styles you’d like to learn together, pop a bottle of wine, and have fun with it. You can even both dress up like you’re at a fancy ball.
