5 Foods That Have More Fat and Calories Than You Think!

| June 14th, 2012

Many of us do our best to watch what we eat. We try to count calories and fat content, but often don’t have the chance. There are some foods that sneak by… seemingly harmless, maybe even hiding behind the illusion of “healthy”, that are, in fact, quite unhealthy.

Here are five examples of foods that are much worse for you than you probably realize.

Big Pretzels

These doughy snacks seem pretty harmless, yet the average soft, big pretzel yields 483 calories and 4.4 grams of fat! Even so, if you find yourself starved at a carnival, a pretzel is still a better bet than an elephant ear or a deep-fried doughnut sandwich…

Chef’s Salad with 2 Ounces of Thousand Island Dressing

I’ll be healthy and just have a salad. Not so fast. A thick dressing like Thousand Island will make your plate of lettuce weigh in at 860 calories and a whopping 61 grams of fat!

Blueberry Muffin

A medium-sized blueberry muffin may seem like merely a part of a breakfast, or a snack before lunch. Unfortunately, this berry-speckled treat will add 444 calories and 21.7 grams of fat to your diet. (Insert “muffin top” joke here.)

Turkey, Bacon and Avocado Club (On Wheat)

A simple club sandwich can sneak up on you with high-fat items like avocado and bacon. This sandwich will inconspicuously throw 660 calories and 38.5 grams of fat your way!

Mixed, Dry-Roasted Nuts (One Cup)

Almonds, cashews, peanuts and walnuts definitely have their health benefits, but not without a cost. One cup of these will add 814 calories and 70.5 grams of fat to your daily totals. Pretty nuts, huh?

Things aren’t always what they seem, are they? Do your research! You never know what calories and grams of fat hide behind an innocent-looking snack.
