How to Deal with Big Spender Friends When you have Little Spender Funds

Blog | October 24th, 2011

Wouldn’t it be great if every friend you had believed in the same budgeting ideals and values that you did? Unfortunately, people are not placed into our life based on these similarities. Sometimes it’s our differences that attract us to one another. This common dilemma of having big spender friends, with little personal funds to keep up with their lavish lifestyles can be an easier fix than one might assume.

Economically speaking, times are hard for the majority of people. Being unable to keep up financially with your extravagant friends is entirely understandable. With that said, you don’t need to cut out friend time just because you are cutting out certain expenses. Below is a list of simple ways to decrease your spending without getting rid of fun nights out with the girls.

1.       If your spendthrift friends frequently go out to eat, try eating your meals at home before meeting up with them.  Let your friends know ahead of time that you are working hard to save your money at the moment.

2.       If your big spender friends ask you to join them for a day at the mall, leave your credit card/debit card/ checkbook at home! Bring enough cash for any necessities you may need. Leaving your big money at home will leave you without the option of splurging on your wants, instead of your needs.

3.       Invite your friends over to your place for a girls-night-in.  Purchasing food and alcohol at your local grocery store is significantly less expensive than a night out on the town.

4.       Be honest with your friends (and yourself), about your comfort levels when it comes to spending. Any real friend will respect you for your honesty and often times work towards accommodating your budget.

5.       Determine your spending limits before going out. This tip is not only applicable for shopping, bars and expensive restaurants. You can use this trick before going to the grocery store.

6.       And finally, feel free to say no to things. Just because you are invited, doesn’t necessarily mean you need to attend.

Remember, we are in this together! Saving money while hanging out with friends who are heavy spenders is entirely possible. Setting some specific spending limits for yourself and explaining your frugality to your friends are all simple ways to cut back on your spending, without cutting back on girl time!
