Travel on a Shoestring without Sacrificing Fun: Part 2

Blog | January 24th, 2012

In our previous article, we started a discussion about ways that you can stay frugal while travelling. We covered different methods that can save you money while getting to your destination but what about once you get there? How do you save money on the rest of your trip? Don’t worry; we have you covered. We have more tips and tactics that you can use to have a great vacation or trip without draining your bank account.

Let’s start with your hotel bill. This is the biggest expense when you are actually in the city. It should be the second thing you consider when you are travelling, after your flight. Make sure you are checking sites such as Kayak.com to be certain that you are getting the best available deal. Be sure to check out the amenities when you do this and make sure you aren’t paying for things you don’t want or need. You can also try going to sites such as Priceline.com that will let you bid for a lower price on your hotel room. Although you don’t get to pick the exact hotel you want, you will get a great deal on a place in your area. If you are travelling to a friend or family member’s house, find out ahead of time if they have extra room for you. Stay close to your loved ones and save on accommodations; it’s a win-win!

When you are actually exploring the city, try to avoid the usual tourist spots. If you have your heart set on doing one thing then of course you should do it. After all, why would you go to New York if you didn’t get to see the Empire State building or a Broadway play? However, you should also go to spots that are outside of the norm. Do your research and find fun places that might interest you that are a little outside of the area. This will give you the opportunity to see something unique that will be less crowded. Many of these things will also be significantly cheaper than major attractions or free altogether!

You can do the same type of thing when you are trying to find a good restaurant or bar. Do some research and try to find an establishment that offers a more local flavor. These places are also probably significantly cheaper and less crowded than the more famous restaurants you would see on travel shows. You could also just avoid these eateries altogether. Cook meals with your friends and family. While you are doing your hotel research, see if you can find a place with a kitchen or kitchenette. Even if it’s only one meal a day, you could keep a lot of cash in your pocket by staying in and cooking for yourself.

These are just some suggestions that you can take with you the next time you go for an adventure outside of your hometown. There are many ways that you can save and still have a successful vacation. Do you have your own way to save while you are travelling? Tell us about it in the comments below!
