Apparently some psychologists believe that maintaining eye contact is the secret to increasing intimacy between two people - even complete strangers! Eyes are, after all, the windows to the soul, as the old adage goes.
You're probably thinking, "Eye contact? That's it? I maintain eye contact all the time when I'm talking to people!" But here's the thing, when was the last time you really gazed into someone's eyes? When was the last time you noticed the little specks of color in your partner's irises? When was the last time you looked, deeply, into your friend's eyes without laughing or making a smart quip, or looking away?
In the video below, a group of people were asked to do just that - gaze into each other's eyes. At first, some were uncomfortable, unsure what to do with their hands, whether they should say something. It's easy to understand why looking into people's eyes can make people feel uneasy. It is a very intimate thing to do. Keeping eye contact for a prolonged period of time is surprisingly harder than we think. It's even more challenging with all the noise in our heads, the distractions in our environment and whatnot. But try it and see how it makes you feel; how it makes your partner feel. The results will probably surprise you!
