Want to Save Money? There’s an App for That

Blog | November 16th, 2011

When you finish this level of Angry Birds, think about the amazing things you can do from your smartphone. From flashlights and conversion calculators to news updates and social media tools, your smartphone is probably filled with fun and useful applications, or “apps”. Between trying to find a “Triple Word Score” on Words With Friends and asking your map for directions to your next destination, take a second to look at these iPhone apps that can actually save you money. (Note that these apps are for the iPhone, but the same or similar apps should be available on any smartphone.)

First, get your funds in order with the Mint.com Personal Finance app. Voted one of TIME Magazine’s 50 Best iPhone Apps of 2011, this program will let you keep track, budget and organize all of your finances. View your bank accounts, loans, retirement and more all in one place.

Yes, all of these apps are free (for basic usage), but that doesn’t mean you can afford to miss a bill payment. The Pageonce Bills app keeps track of all your bills for you. On one simple screen, you can easily and clearly see every bill that you have, how much money each bill will be, and when they will be due. When a bill’s due date is approaching, you can opt to have Pageonce Bills send you notifications. These features are free, but for $0.99 a month (or $8.99 a year) you can add a feature that allows you to pay your bills through the application.

Now that your funds are in order, you can start using apps to save in other places.  For instance, download GasBuddy to find gas stations near you, complete with current gas prices. Don’t pay more for gas because you are unaware of a cheaper option down the street. With high gas prices, GasBuddy can help you find the best price close to you.

Equally as frustrating as paying too much for gas is paying too much to get your own hard-earned cash out of an ATM machine. With ATM Hunter by MasterCard, you can find all nearby ATMs, searching for your own bank if you’d like to avoid a withdraw fee from another bank’s machine. You can also filter results by drive-through ATMs, 24-hour locations, wheelchair accessibility, surcharge fees and deposit sharing.  ATM Hunter will also find locations that accept MasterCard PayPass if you are a user of the “tap-and-go” feature.

Your phone can also find a way to pay less for your daily purchases. Either RedLaser or pic2shop will scan an item’s barcode and scour multiple databases for better prices. Both online and local results will be given. Yowza!! Mobile Coupons is another way to save money. This app will let you know about great deals and coupons that are near you geographically.

If you use any or all of these apps, you are sure to save some money. Congratulations! One way to reward yourself is by using the Happy Hours app by GoTime to find great food and drink specials near you, complete with a user-based voter ranking system.
