Blog | November 2nd, 2020

With the holidays just around the corner, we know how overwhelming it is to shop for gifts when money is tight. Whether it’s gifts for loved ones, holiday parties, or family getaways, expenses can add up quickly. We have come up with a few ways for you to cut costs, and encourage you to take part in this year’s No Spend November challenge! You could possibly save up to $250 this month! The extra savings can be very helpful for all the extra holiday spending you will need money for!

Make a Monthly Budget

Try to only spend money on essentials, like paying bills, gas, and groceries. If you’re not sure if something is an essential item, ask yourself if you need it to support yourself and your family. Cut out any extra shopping; trust me you’ll thank us later. Don’t worry, you can still shop during the holidays, we’re just giving you even more options to spend and use your money wisely.

Shop the Deals

A lot of stores participate in Black Friday and in most years they release their Black Friday catalog early so that you can browse and pre-order gifts for your family. Black Friday is a great way to score awesome deals and save lots of money, especially if you are shopping for big items. Check out Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon for great deals all around! Cyber Monday also has great discounts, you might not save as much money, but they still have awesome deals on tons of items online and in stores.

Pick Up a Side Gig

It may not be ideal, but it’s a simple way to save money faster. There are so many new ways to make some quick money nowadays. Think about Uber, Instacart, and online surveys like Swagbucks! There are so many places that are also hiring seasonally, like Macy’s, Target, and Walmart.

Hosting a Party? Make it a Potluck

If you are planning a holiday dinner party this season, think about doing a potluck and having everyone bring a dish. There is no reason you need to be the only one providing and paying for everything (even though you’re choosing to host it). Delegate appetizers, desserts, and drinks. This will lessen the stress of what you have on your plate and also will save you a good chunk of money! You would be surprised how many people don’t mind this type of party!

Pause your Subscriptions

Drop any unnecessary memberships that you aren’t using. Or, consider evaluating which ones you use the least, between the gym, Hulu, Netflix, or Spotify. If you can live a month without some of these subscriptions, you can put that money towards something else this holiday season.

Set a Budget for Buying Gifts

Yes, we mean a gift spending budget! If you want to save money, then you definitely have to make a holiday spending budget. Break it down by each person you will be buying a gift for and put an average of how much you intend to spend on each.

Gifts during the holidays can get a bit overwhelming, especially if you have big families. We know it can be difficult to buy everyone a gift, but then you also feel like you don’t want to leave anyone out in the gift exchange. So to make it easier on your mind and your wallet, think about setting up a Secret Santa gift exchange or white elephant! That way, each person gets a gift, no one is left out, and you aren’t left with an empty wallet either.

Start Using Savings Apps

Savings apps are useful tools that can automatically save small amounts of money, like rounding up the change on your everyday purchases. Try Qapital, Digit, or Acorns. Before you know it, the small amounts will add up and you will have money saved up for your holiday purchases. Or, you can apply these savings to buy something bigger, like a car or house. You will be surprised by how much you can save up in a short amount of time!

Depending on how many of our tips you use, you could end up saving up to $250 this month. Hopefully, these tips are as helpful to you as they have been to us! Happy saving!
